Women Voters Have Not Forgotten Abortion Rights

Economic concerns should enhance, not diminish, support

Some recent polls and analyses have downplayed the importance of reproductive rights in women’s upcoming election choices. As if the right to control their own bodies suddenly doesn’t matter anymore because grocery prices have risen.

Don’t buy it.

As in all elections, voters respond to various concerns. It’s not simply the economy vs. abortion. And if it was, no anti-abortion candidate has offered a plan to end the global inflation fueled by the pandemic.

This election, the fear of losing our democracy is a new worry because of the varied consequences of the Jan. 6 insurrection. The loss of decisions over health-care choices is also a blow to democracy. The choice of whether or not to expand your family is certainly an economic matter.

Just because public protests have ended doesn’t mean that people have accepted the extreme abortion laws imposed by many states. In fact, the backlash against the Supreme Court’s overturn of federal abortion rights has already produced political impact:
