Vice President Kamala Harris greets a young supporter. White House.gov.

“Laffin’ Kamala” is one nickname GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump quickly penned on his rival, Vice President Kamala Harris. Even news stories find ways to mention her body-shaking “cackle.”

Her frequent laughter did initially perplex me. How could such a polished, professional woman emit such hearty haw-haws and girlish giggles, often at awkward moments? I wondered if it was simply a distraction tactic, or a way to attract attention.

But Harris says she inherited her late mother’s laugh. She shared a memory of her mother and friends in the kitchen, swapping stories, cooking together and laughing heartily. It felt genuine. It also brought back memories of my own family gatherings, full of women with strange laughs and strong spirits.

Also, Harris has displayed joyous energy in her now weeklong effort to become the Democratic nominee. It’s infectious, producing record-breaking fund-raising and high registration of young voters. Her laugh is a big part of the excitement around her 11th-hour sprint to replace President Joe Biden, who ended his reelection bid.

This had been a dismal election season with a rematch between unpopular, elderly foes. It’s refreshing to be courted by a vibrant politician whose sense of mirth easily connects with others.

Scientifically, laughter relieves stress and brightens moods. In an election season fraught with fear and division, that’s really good medicine.
