Eviction crisis still exists
We can’t ignore need for affordable housing
The mass evictions many feared when a national moratorium ended Aug. 26 have not materialized, according to analysis by The Washington Post.
No one reason why not. Local governments started distributing federal aid to help renters and landlords. Some jurisdictions’ own moratoriums are just ending. Eviction courts are now gearing back up.
Yet, we still face the housing crisis at the root of the suffering.
The pandemic exposed an inadequate affordable housing supply, cutbacks in government subsidies and low wages many workers earn. A quarter of renter households spend over 50 percent of their monthy income on rent.
Now is the time to push local governments to invest more in affordable housing. They are awash in federal money and making plans to use it to build prisons or sports venues.
Don’t allow this problem to again be ignored, until the next catastrophe reveals just how many people struggle to survive.
